Beekeeping Mentor and Coach - The Road to Better Beekeeping [Better Beekeeping Workshops]

What are the best workshops and class topics for beekeepers?

I often get this question from beekeepers – especially those who are keenly aware that managing any kind of livestock is more about keeping up than sitting still!! There’s always the latest research and studies that come out that can potentially change the way we operate. How to feed bees and the components they require change. Behavioral habits morph, and equipment is always improving. The better beekeeper knows they must keep up not just rest on their laurels.

So what do I study?

What are the most important topics in Beginning Beekeeping to focus on? How much information do I need to consume, what portion of all of that can I prioritize so I don’t drown in a swamp of data, videos, and literature? All very understandable questions and the ones that get asked a lot. Luckily, there’s a very simple answer and it’s based on years of experience and observation. There are just a very few BIG problems that you need to know a lot about and the rest you can survive by knowing a little. The trick is to figure out which ones go in which bucket.

The BIG 4 - Nutrition, Queens, Swarm Control, and Mites & Diseases

Here’s a hint of what’s inside. Nutrition, queen status, mite and disease control. The big 4 of basic beekeeping. Knowing much about any one of them puts you heads above the regular beekeepers with huge losses every winter. Know a lot about all three puts you in the pro category, where every spring will be a breath of fresh air and a ton of flying bees!!

Can You learn beekeeping from a mentor online?

Beekeeping Workshops

Yep, we think YOU CAN, but you need the right mentor or coach! A beekeeping mentor that gives you information based on your circumstances and has plenty of resources in images, data, and graphics that represent what you are seeing in your colonies but also what you should be seeing. Or what is normal. That way you can get some perspective about not only what should be going on, but why and how you can fix it.   All of that requires a team who has plenty of good visuals so you can “see”, and we take the time to record everything – you could say we’re beekeeping data geeks!!

Also, we know that the basics and fundamentals are just that - universal across all regions and environments.  After all, they're livestock and just because your environment is different only means you do the same things everyone else needs to do (feed, treat, etc.) only you need to figure out WHEN to do them.  We help you with that by teaching you the WHY!!  Check out the membership levels and see what you think, and even more important – is it a good learning fit for me.

Beekeeping Coach and Mentor

We teach, nurture, mentor, coach and guide.

To facilitate learning we support our beginning beekeepers and even our more experienced ones with regular study halls and Q&A sessions to give our students timely and seasonal guidance for related answers and solutions. We have a beekeeping chat and beekeeping discussion thread inside the platform for open discussion and interaction of our beekeeping community.

Also provided is a beekeeper blog section for current happenings in the hives. We’ve produced a lot of content in the form of pdf resources on monthly checklists, forage resources and bee biology which are located in our “library system” in the course access sections!!

As a matter of fact, here’s one piece of content for you to click and use for our 9 Step Bee Bootcamp Roadmap System.  So, feel free to check it out and use it as a map to how to focus on your beekeeping educational journey.

So, how did this journey start for me?

Well, it simply started with a garden. I love gardening and love putting vegetables in my freezer to enjoy in the winter. That just wasn’t happening my first few years after I moved into this region. It took a while, but after soil testing and seed source changes, it occurred to me that my unproductive yard was due to a pollinator shortage and not a plant issue. Flowers as well as vegetables really didn’t grow well, and harvest was poor or nonexistent.

I decided then to add beekeeping to my list of occupations, and although I had a very experienced history with farm animals, bugs were an entirely new and different beast! So, my beekeeping education started, and very quickly I learned what very limited structured resources there were in the beekeeping space. I decided to develop and design this platform with those of you in mind that have the same start I did - I didn't have a beekeeping mentor, there was no structured learning path, but I waded through tons of overwhelming sites online with so called gurus that may have some experience, but their primary skill is making videos.

This system is different – a  ROADMAP with SUPPORT. Built by a seasoned educator with a lifetime of experience in managed livestock, and who’s been refined in the fire of teaching in universities and institutions across the country.

How do I get started on the path to better and most importantly, less stressful beekeeping?

One way to make positive incremental improvement of course is moving your skills and knowledge forward in small steps. Biting off more than you can chew is never a good idea, and only creates frustration and failure. Add to that a bit of problem solving and mistake reduction and VWAH LAH!! You are a BETTER BEEKEEPER. How do we improve skills, increase knowledge and reduce mistakes the fastest and easiest way?? Find a good beekeeping coach or mentor. That’s what we do here at The Road to Better Beekeeping (here's the link to our information page). We guide you through those pitfalls every month of the beekeeping season so although you may toddle along the edge of some of the struggles (which is always a good learning experience), you don’t fall completely down into the pit of despair and irretrievable darkness!!

So there you go....a clear path to beekeeping success!
